Day 4 - Hong Kong (30th March 2010)

We got up quite early and went to Mui Kee Porridge/Congee which is located inside the Fa Yuen Street Municipal Bulding’s Food Court. It's just a short walk from Dragon Hostel.

I ordered meatball porridge with char kuey tiew. It was kind of cold that time so eating something hot and delicious was total delight. The porridge was so good that we even went back there again on Friday for brunch.

Nice and delicious meatball porridge. HKD23 per person for the porridge and Yau ja gwai 油炸鬼

Our plan was to reach Tung Chung by 10am via MTR as the Ngong Ping 360 cable ride only starts operation from 10pm on weekdays. So after breakfast, we took the MTR from Mongkok to Lai King (Tsuen Wan Line) and then transit from Lai King to Tung Chung (Tung Chung line). It was quite a long journey as it took about 35 minutes to reach our destination. Good thing it was after 9am so there weren't many people in the train.

When we reach the Ngong Ping 360 cable car station, we were informed by the Ngong Ping 360 staff that the cable car operation was suspended due to strong wind. We had no choice but to take the bus instead. At first we lined up to purchase the ticket. But a few minutes later, we were told that we could skip the queue if we possess the Octopus card and we did that.

The bus journey took about 45 minutes and we reached Po Lin Monastery and Tian Tan Buddha after 11am. This kind of threw the timing off as we were supposed to reach by 10.30am since we wanted to reach Disneyland by 2pm.

Tian Tan Buddha from afar.

Walked to here from the bus stop. We had to climb 268 steps to get up there.

When we finally reached the Buddha after climbing the long flight of stairs, the wind was blowing very strong. It felt like i was about to be blown away from the top :) Anyway climbing to the top wasn't as tough as I thought. The view from the top was spectacular and I just couldn't stop marveling at the magnificent Big Buddha above my head.

After spending about half an above taking photos, we decided to descend towards the Po Lin Monastery. My friend being a devout Buddhist bought some praying materials like joss sticks & money papers and started his prayers there.

After the monastery, we walked towards the cable car station and hoped that the it would be operational again. Sad to say it wasn't as the wind was still strong and so we hop onto a bus back to Tung Chung. Upon leaving the bus, I saw that the cable car was operational again. Argh I had no luck boarding it. Next time :)

We went into the Tung Chung shopping mall for a quick lunch as it already late around 1pm no thanks to the long bus ride. We searched high and low for McDonald's but it turned out that shopping mall was really big and it wasnt easy to find it. I decided to ask a local working at a big hypermart in the mall for the location of McDonald's. He were kinda puzzled when i said "McDonald's" as if they have never heard that before. My friend told me to ask for "muk dor no" and immediately they understood me :) And so we headed straight to McDonald's and i grabbed a nice McBacon Burger set meal which isn't available in Malaysia. It tasted delicious :)

After our lunch we headed to the Tung Chung MTR station. We had to interchange at the Sunny Bay station and boarded the special Disney train to Disneyland. The train was special as it was filled with small statues of Disney characters and it was playing Disney music. It was my 1st time to Disneyland and so I was very excited. I've always wanted to goto Disneyland even since I was a kid so it was a dream come true :D

Disney Fireworks. Incredible!

After the fireworks at Disneyland, we went to the souvenir shops and bought some expensive souvenirs there before leaving Disneyland for good.

Now before I went on this trip, i did some research on the must eat food in Hong Kong and one of them is the famous Roasted Goose. I happen to come across this blog that talks about this famous restaurant at New Territory called Yue Kee which sells one of the best Roast Geese in HK at a reasonable price (alot cheaper than Yung Kee). But getting there was going to be a big challenge since there's no train nearby.

The blog shows how to get there from Tsing Yi MTR station, which was 1 stop away from Sunny Bay MTR station and that we had to take a mini bus 308M to get to the place. As we didnt want to pass up this opportunity to eat the famous Roasted Goose, we took this challenge to get there with only the information given in the blog :)

When we reached Tsing Yi and left the train station, we were in some kind of shopping mall. We just followed the signboard with the bus icon which led us out of the shopping mall building and we saw a big outer parking space with some buses. It was already night and so went went searching for the Mini Bus 308M. Fortunately, each section or booths has a big signboard that clearly says tells me the bus number for that section and finally found our bus.

We told the bus driver our destination by showing him the picture and name of the restaurant and asked him to tell us when we have reached our destination. He didnt say anything and simply nodded. At first I thought that the restaurant was actually by the roadside and that it'd be clearly visible along the road based on the description given in the blog. After about 10-20 mins ride, the bus driver told us that we have reached our destination. We left the bus and looked around but didnt notice anything that resembled Yue Kee restaurant or any clue on how to get there. And so we walked abit and as we were walking pass a bridge, we saw Yue Kee but it was like on the other side of the area .We didnt know how to get there as there didnt seem to be a road leading to it. My friend then asked a local there and he told us to go on straight along the main road and we'll then notice a small road on the left which leads to Yue Kee.

Upon reaching Yue Kee, we noticed a number of big cars picking up people at the restaurant. I knew it must be really special as even the rich people goto this place for their Roasted Goose :) Needless to say we were happy to reach this place on our own and also to eat their famous Roasted Goose at New Territory which we always hear in Hong Kong TVB drama.

Yue Kee (裕記燒鵝飯店) Restaurant

We ordered the 1/2 roasted goose as the main dish with a plate century egg and a place of tofu as side dishes. The tofu was tasty and i simply love dark century egg, especially when eaten with their ginger was simply amazing! Then finally came the roasted goose. I believe that was the first time i've eaten such a delicious Roasted Goose! The tender and delicious meat made it 2nd best favourite HK food after Tin Ho Dim Sum during the trip :) The total bill come down to HKD 270 for 3 persons.

Century Eggs and Touhu. Both were nice especially the century eggs

We left Yue Kee around after 10.30pm and headed back to the place where the previous bus dropped us. According to the blog, there is a bus that goes direct to Kowloon area. However we were the only ones waiting at the bus stop and it was getting really really late. We started to worry as it was close to 11pm. Then came a mini bus and we asked if he was headed to Kowloon or Mongkok and he asked us to hop in. Later he told us we were lucky as it was probably the last bus headed to Kowloon as normally it's very hard to catch a bus there after 11pm especially since it was a weekday :)

After the scary bus ride (felt like i was in some dangerous racing vehicle), he dropped us at Yau Ma Tei and we had to walk back to the hostel. Along the way, we noticed a stall selling Stinky Fried Tofu and i ordered one. That was the 1st time i've ever eaten one and so i imagined the taste would be great although it smells like something that came out of a sewer or garbage bin. I was quite dissapointed as it tasted normal to me. It was just fried tofu with some sauce but seriously i didnt find it addictive and i find Malaysia's local delicacy like Durian or even Goreng Pisang to be much better.

We reached back the hostel after midnight. And so ended our hectic day where we managed to cramp in Tian Tan Buddha+Disneyland+Yue Kee Roasted Goose :)
